The original Claymore swords were massive, two-handed, double-edged sword that was exercised during the 16th century 18 per tenacious, hard-fighing Scottish Highlands. Used for both cutting and breaking in melee, it was the Highlanders' weapons of choice for their continuous uprisings against the English and their blood and seemingly constant-between clan battles. Its design is almost always incorporated a cross handle downsloping arms that had quatrefoils (a design that is similar to a four-leaf clover) at the ends. These Claymore swords requires a great deal of strength to use effectively: they were usually about 4 1 / 2 feet long and they typically weighed about 5 1 / 2 pounds. The blade was usually only about 4 feet of cold, brutal steel.
A different kind of sword Claymore somewhat shorter, a little more advanced in design, only had a unique advantage. Instead of the cross, the hand grip were used uniform of regiments Scots in the British army.

Swords weapons were not effective until the dawn of the Bronze Age, and became really great tools of war during the Iron Age. Previous to this time sheets were formed of rough stone, wood, or other materials such as bones and horns. While these materials were effective in output, cutting and drilling, metal swords are far superior to their ancestors.
It was not until the man is around 3,700 BC C. copper swords that could be considered truly effective. Copper in their own swords was very soft and made with this material requires frequent sharpening. Copper was melted with tin to make bronze, which requires much less maintenance than their copper, and a new era was born. The great civilizations of the Middle East to their large armies armed with bronze swords. Swords in ancient Egypt daggers seemed large, and were designed only to push. The swords first cut had a sickle-shaped blade and were invented around 2500 BC. The Assyrians era also wore bronze swords, which were installed in the belt of the soldier and carried horizontally. These principles were also swords rather short and very decorative, for the moment, usually with some kind of ornamentation below the hilt. The Greeks of the Bronze Age swords more employees used only to push. The first Greek swords took the form of a cross, but gradually evolved into a slightly curved shape around 700 BC.
A new era in human history began with the discovery of iron, which was smelted as early as 3000 BC, bringing the start of the Iron Age. The Hittites are credited the first to make swords of this new material, and that they conquered vast tracts of territory, conquest easily using the opposing forces using inferior weapons. The iron swords were created with more resistant and durable than bronze handmade, and created a much better weapon. Although iron had been known long before to use as a foil material, blacksmiths, it is very difficult to work with them. The Hittites discovered, probably by accident, that if the coal was heated together with iron, then put in water to cool, it could make a durable metal blade. He kept this secret closely guarded, and was for many years before that this technology reached the Middle East, Africa and the rest of the developed world. The Romans, famous for their swordsmanship, adopted after iron weapons Battle of Cannae in 216 BC.
While knives had been drawn before metal was around, were crude and often ineffective at cutting or thrusting. Because artisans to promote the art of forging swords of the Bronze Age and Iron Age, which became an absolute necessity for close combat. Whether mounted on riding or participating in hand-to-head to foot, swords became a universal weapon to keep the enemy at bay.
