The quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners, Sam Bradford was named Player of the Year by the Associated Press, the announcement was made Monday after they were elected. This is the third award for this year since it was given and the Davey O'Brien Award and Heisman Trophy. For this award was competing against Colt McCoy of Texas and Tim Tebow of Florida, the same players that competed with him for the Heisman Trophy. Bradford received 27 votes, followed by McCoy with 17 and Tebow with 16.
Josh Heupel, the current quarterbacks coach and former Oklahoma player who won the same award in 2000, Bradford said he deserved the award for all the effort that has been doing, even in the offseason. He explained that Bradford has grown a lot through this process three years and which has the character to win to have a leadership roll in the team as a quarterback, his teammates really believe in him and that is what makes the difference.
The team's next goal is to push for Anti National Championship University of Florida in Miami. They are a very competitive team and have the same record for the season has Oklahoma, 12-1.
"Playing in the national championship is something we have talked about the three years I've been here, and we still have to do that," Bradford said. "So that to have that opportunity … It's really exciting. Me and my teammates are really ready to go there. "
His fellow team are very proud of him and think he deserved the prize, especially since it's a great guy who still has his feet on the ground. They also consider that the awards received for the team as well, because the effort comes from all together.
Bradford has made a great effort this season. He was injured in the game against Oklahoma State when he tore ligaments in his left thumb on November 29, but despite playing in the game against Missouri by the title of the Big 12 on December 6, although he would have surgery the next day.
This has been one of the best seasons for the team to Oklahoma, they have scored 702 points in total, surpassing the record set in 2006 Hawaii 656. They are also the first college team in 89 years to score 60 points in five games row.
Bradford began his career with the Oklahoma Sooners in 2006 when he was fighting for the starting quarterback position after Rhett Bomar was dismissed for violating NCAA rules. He won the starting position for the 2007 season, he showed that it truly deserves the position as had a very good season and the team won the Big 12, but lost the Fiesta Bowl against West Virginia on Jan. 2.
In Bradford this season has passed for 4464 yards and 48 touchdowns, breaking the record established that Jason White in 2003 for school. He also leads the country in passing the efficiency and has thrown only six interceptions.
