I have a collection made by hand a knife, how can I clean the rust out of it?
I have a collection 12 "knife someone did for me. It started to rust after being packed away for a few years. What is the best way to remove the rust so as not to damage blade? I NEVR-BRASSO boring, that this work or is there something better to use? Thank you. In addition, the mold is quite thick. It seems hard to lose.
True, who have not mirror finish, regardless of which method you use. Whatever your choice is for this process, removing rust can be facilitated by immersion in a penetrating rust like Kroil or PB-Blaster. WD-40 can work, but is much slower. WD-40 is lowered, so you can safely store in your kitchen sink without kill all around. PB, not quite. Kroil is usually a mail-order it, but PB-Blaster is available from most good auto parts or tractor stores. Do not ask me what it means to PB, I can assure you that peanut butter is not in any sense. Maybe Oil Base? Anyway, a little patience goes a long way. Spray as much as you can, then leave it. Make sure you do not understand the material handling. Clean the handle immediately to avoid absorption through capillary action in the handle scales. The oil stains the area around the pins. come back tomorrow and give it one more time with a old toothbrush, then sterilized again. You can probably use a stainless steel brush, but I like to try on a small spot first to see if the scratches. A brush regular carbon wire probably will. If you go to the store to buy one, search for "SS" in the serial number. Sometimes these things are so poorly labeled this is the only way to say it is carbon and stainless steel. You can also use the scraping method, if not scratching. I cleaned up several old knives with this method. What remains in the oxide used to be …. boneless regions and wine stains with the sheet represents a topographic map. The sides of the knives, especially those made by hand, are often softer than the edge. That's why even though worn all day to tune one, you can gouge the flat with a stone in question seconds. The border is more difficult because you have to keep in shape (after sharpen). The parties are not so hard, or the knife would be fragile and prone to breakage. Most polishes contain a mild abrasive, even if you think you do not. They are best for cleaning light oxidation or cloudiness and stains / Fingerprints, but no rust. You can use these later. Flitz is a great protector too. We have used this product in casting sculptures metal. If you decide to polish the blade, is a long road, littered with elbow grease. It is definitely possible, but you must commit.
