Canoe Black

It has been nearly 40 years since I first sailed a canoe, and now is the time to share the experience.
I was with my Boy Scout troop in Miami. We went for a canoe trip to the area of 10,000 islands of Florida, a place where land and sea to combat supremacy over the southern tip of the state.
We rowed a mixture canoe to an island, perhaps only a couple three miles or so. We camped in a field just above the watermark, the floor scattered with coral and transient. Plants was mainly of sea grape and whatever things weed grows in conditions so inhospitable valid only for the crabs, mosquitoes and sand fleas everywhere.
At that age I had almost reached the point where I was too independent to be a scout more and this would be my last trip hanging cord cord of a Scout Master, especially one that (in my mind youthfully arrogant) was better off sitting in front of the tube watching a game of trying to lead Dolphins outdoor life hard as I did. I had already spent many days in the Everglades and practically lived in the Pine Barrens drained swamp surrounding our southern Dade County home by then. (Within a few years of this journey I was held by the feet of the trap in crocodile-infested, chest deep water in the Big Cypress Pantano, but that's another story.)
During one of the many lulls in the action field, took off with the boat assigned to me and my mate tent, a Grumman, if memory serves, aluminum, sure. Packing a spinning rod and a concert of mullet, I went in search of adventure, and maybe some fresh fish for dinner. After sticking to a flat black myself and harassment of a hook, I sat on the bottom of the canoe resting on my usual horizontal nap. After a while, I had a strike. Shark! It pulled hard and started to swim to deeper waters with a canoe attached tin and adolescents. I hung in my corner rod adjusted and the vessel be in line with the fish, knowing it would be a snap out of place when a shark is on the line.
He pulled.
I pulled.
He became more difficult.
I held on, (harder).
And then the line separated, but not after he pulled me and canoe in open water.
How cool.
I rowed back to camp with an air of success that caught and released, a huge shark. Okay, so the story went.
The next day we went home. As we broke camp, I noted the wind in the right direction. Having sailed a bit in my Uncle Carl's boat had a little familiarity with the whys of the sail. Not much, of course, but some knowledge is that which spawned the idea of candle-no paddle. I convinced my fellow tent (smaller than me) that this was the way to follow. He tied two sticks-probably two of the tent poles together, square sails, and tied to them an army poncho. He tied the mast forward to the bench and that would to act as the move to keep it upright.
Under the direction of paddle in hand, (now, never seen this before, but assumed) we left the beach, bent for leather. Well, not immediately. For a while we sailed, while others paddling ahead of us. They laughed. I knew better. Tentmate / mast step complained that we'd get into trouble. I assured him that we were being good Scouts and told him to stop bawling and Hold.
Then … we have the wind ….
This was not much, but began to accelerate, leaving behind the rowers. It remained for his life, grabbed my shovel and guidelines.
Wow.
The poncho flapping full and tight as the wind rose. The sound of water running over the tin and the increase of the rivets as the mast step became more strong in their complaints. We were leaving a trail … rowers was left behind. I have not heard a word of Scout Master, who was probably appalled by the site two of their young soldiers, showing him in so obvious (and clearly heroic) way.
I guess I beat the rest of the troops about an hour. Tentmate had afraid that we would be in trouble and complained of having been taken hostage and reminded him that he was not a hostage, but press, like the British did to the American sailors, and should be proud that it was part of a great adventure.
Scout Master was crazy we had left behind and the others punished me for being irresponsible and what would have happened if broken and all I could think was that was better off living at home with others of its kind and was red-faced and I was sure it was because it was delivered by a boy not yet old enough to drive that was twice, not three times the adventurer who would never be.
And That, my friends, is how I got to sail a boat the first time … and things have not been "right" from … LOL!
